The White House will get bipartisan support for tougher action against Putin.
Leading Democratic US Senator Chris Coons has called on US President Donald Trump to apply the practice of intercepting oil tankers from Venezuela also to ships carrying Russian oil.
This is reported by MS NOW.
Coons said the Trump administration is already using the military to intercept tankers of the "shadow navy" that supports the Venezuelan regime.
He emphasized that the same tools should be applied to "the navy that funds Russia's war machine, supports Iran and facilitates North Korea."
The senator is convinced that such a move would get the support of Congress. In his opinion, Trump "would get bipartisan support for tougher action against Putin and for limiting funding for his war machine waging war against Ukraine."
At the same time, Coons criticized the foreign policy of the President of the United States, recalling that Trump promised before the election to "avoid foolish new wars abroad," but actually involved the United States in a conflict with one of the most powerful authoritarian regimes in the Western Hemisphere, meaning Venezuela.
The senator added that Trump should focus on Russia's war against Ukraine and other areas of foreign policy where he "has not used the tools available."
Couns' statements came amid US attempts to arrest an oil tanker in the Caribbean for the third time.
