Tanks appeared on the streets of Caracas.

The United States has launched a military operation in Venezuela. So far, apparently, unofficially, as the first to report about the explosions in Caracas at about 2 a.m. local time were local residents, and only after that the world media began to write about it. The fact that the US attacked Venezuela is evidenced by numerous photos and videos of American Chinook helicopters, which are in service with the US Army. Focus has compiled what is known.

Residents of Caracas woke up early this morning, January 3, to a series of explosions over the Venezuelan capital. They also reported airplanes flying over the city and power outages.

Caracas explosions - what is known

"That sound woke me up and when I looked out the window I saw puffs of smoke in La Carlota," said a resident of Las Mercedes. La Carlota is home to the Generalissimo de Miranda airbase and the military airport.

From El Valle, southwest of Caracas, there are reports of explosions at Fort Tiuna, where the Venezuelan Defense Ministry and army command headquarters are located. Meanwhile, residents of Cumbres de Curumo, located near another entrance to Fort Tiuna, also reported hearing explosions.

Witnesses said they felt the first explosion at 1:55 am. Locals report that ports, a naval school and other military facilities were attacked.

On social media, videos and photos began circulating showing Chinook helicopters, puffs of smoke and fire.

About an hour after the alleged bombings, there was still no official information from the US. U.S. President Donald Trump made no statement.

Two hours later, there was a statement from Venezuela's foreign ministry.

"The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela rejects, condemns and declares to the international community the flagrant military aggression committed by the current government of the United States of America against the territory and population of Venezuela in civilian and military areas of the city of Caracas, the capital of the Republic, as well as in the states of Miranda, Aragua and La Guaira," the statement from Venezuelan Foreign Minister Ivan Gil follows.

Hil also said that the purpose of the attack is nothing less than "the seizure of Venezuela's strategic resources, particularly oil and minerals, in an attempt to violently break the country's political independence."

"They will not succeed. After more than two hundred years of independence, the people and their legitimate government remain steadfast in defense of sovereignty and the inalienable right to decide their own destiny. "The attempt to launch a colonial war to destroy the republican form of government and impose 'regime change' in alliance with the fascist oligarchy will fail like all previous attempts," Gil wrote, saying that President Nicolas Maduro has ordered the implementation of all national defense plans and the entire country must be mobilized "to counter this imperialist aggression."

He also called on the peoples and governments of Latin America, the Caribbean, and the world to "mobilize in active solidarity in the face of this imperial aggression."

Social media reports are circulating that Maduro has been evacuated from Milaflores Palace, the official residence.

It is also reported that the United States has deactivated all transponders on its planes, meaning it is impossible to track U.S. military aircraft in the present. While ongoing explosions are reported in Caracas, Venezuela.

White House Knows About Caracas Explosions - What's Known

CBS News sources said Trump administration officials said they were aware of reports of explosions and military aircraft over Caracas, but requests for comment from the White House did not receive an immediate response, nor did the Venezuelan government.

The president of neighboring Colombia, Gustavo Petro, said in a social media post that someone was "at this moment bombing Caracas," without specifying who.

"Attention all the world: Venezuela has been attacked by missiles," he said, calling for a United Nations meeting.

Journalist Jennifer Jacobs reported that U.S. President Donald Trump ordered strikes on targets inside Venezuela, including military installations, U.S. officials said, as the administration stepped up its campaign against President Nicolas Maduro's regime early Saturday morning.
