Sky News: US Captures Maduro In Venezuela As A Result Of Negotiations

There are no casualties among the U.S. military.

Insiders in the Venezuelan opposition said the capture of President Nicolas Maduro was a "negotiated exit." An unnamed U.S. official said there were no casualties among the U.S. military.

That Maduro's capture during the operation in Venezuela was a negotiated exit, Sky News writes, citing unnamed sources. The New York Times in turn reports an anonymous U.S. official's claim that there were no U.S. military casualties.

The insider did not comment on Venezuelan casualties.

U.S. President Donald Trump in comments to the NYT noted the success of the U.S. operation to capture Maduro.

"A lot of good planning, a lot of great troops and great people. It was a brilliant operation, really," the U.S. leader said.

When asked whether he sought authorization regarding the military operation in Venezuela from the U.S. Congress, Trump promised to answer during a news conference in Mar-a-Lago.

The NYT reporters also noted that if Trump's claim about Maduro's capture is true, Venezuela's constitution would shift power to Vice President Delcy Rodriguez, who is in charge of economic policy. However, the states have not recognized Maduro's legitimacy, and the Venezuelan opposition considers exiled politician Edmundo Gonzalez to be the legitimate president.

Venezuela operation: what is known

The US launched strikes in Venezuela on the night of January 3. President Nicolas Maduro signed a decree declaring a state of emergency in the country. Media reported strikes on military bases, airports and Fort Tiuna, where the headquarters of the Ministry of Defense and the Venezuelan army command is located.

The CBS News channel, citing sources, wrote that Trump approved the strikes on Venezuela a few days before the military operation began. It was supposedly supposed to begin after Christmas, but was postponed due to weather conditions.

On the morning of January 3, Trump said Maduro had been captured and taken out of the country along with his wife.
