The dictator's capture was preceded by a massive CIA operation.
A CIA source in the Venezuelan government tracked the whereabouts of Nicolas Maduro both in the days and moments before his capture by U.S. special operations forces. This is reported, citing sources, by The New York Times.
The U.S. intelligence service obtained the intelligence that led to Maduro's capture by monitoring his position and movements with a fleet of stealth drones. This provided near-continuous monitoring in addition to information from Venezuelan informants.
It is not yet clear exactly how the CIA recruited the Venezuelan source who tipped off the Americans to Maduro's whereabouts. However, former officials noted that a $50 million reward offered by the U.S. government for information leading to Maduro's capture apparently helped.
Donald Trump also recounted in an interview with Fox News that U.S. special forces built an exact replica of Maduro's home to prepare for the takeover.
