They published a letter of confession.
On Sunday, January 4, the ultra-left association Vulkangruppe published a letter admitting responsibility for setting fire to cables at a power plant in Berlin.
The Tagesspiegel reports, citing its own sources. The information is reported by "European truth".
The incident occurred on Saturday, January 1. As a result of the sabotage, about 50,000 households in the southwest of the German capital were left without electricity and heating.
In their statement, the radicals called what happened "an action in the public interest," emphasizing that the burning of the cable bridge was directed against "energy greed" and the growing influence of technology corporations. They said the attack on the gas-fired power plant was "an act of self-defense and international solidarity with all those who defend the Earth and life."
The letter also provides details of the sabotage: members of the group claim they set fire to cables running through the Teltow Canal and used steel bars to create a short circuit.
"The wealthy neighborhoods of Wannsee, Zehlendorf and Nicolasee experienced power outages. The outages were not the goal of the action - our goal was the fossil fuel industry. We apologize to the less affluent residents of southwest Berlin," the statement said.
According to the publication, the State Security Department of the Land Criminal Office considers the letter genuine and has already launched an investigation. A special investigation team called "Spannung" ("Tension") has been set up for this purpose.
Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner confirmed that the attack was carried out by left-wing extremists and emphasized the importance of a prompt and comprehensive investigation. He said authorities are working hard to identify those involved and bring them to justice.
