Trump was urged to give up pressure and "fantasies" about taking over the island.
The prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland, Matte Frederiksen and Jens-Frederik Nielsen have called on U.S. President Donald Trump to stop threatening to invade Greenland. They wrote this on their social media accounts on January 4.
Trump, during an interview with The Atlantic magazine about U.S. actions in Venezuela on January 4, reiterated his desire to control Greenland. He also told a briefing aboard Air Force One on Jan. 4 that the U.S. needs Greenland for national security reasons.
Frederiksen wrote on Facebook that the U.S. "has no right to annex any of the three countries that make up the Kingdom of Denmark. She reminded that Denmark, and thus Greenland, is a member of NATO and therefore falls under the Alliance's security guarantees. In addition, Frederiksen noted that the defense agreement between Denmark and the United States gives the United States wide access to Greenland. Also, she said, Denmark has invested heavily in security in the Arctic.
"I therefore urge the United States to stop threatening a historically close ally and another country and another people who have very clearly stated that they are not for sale," Frederiksen said.
Nielsen said on Facebook that the U.S. rhetoric on Greenland "is totally unacceptable." "When the president of the United States talks about 'we need Greenland' and links us to Venezuela and military intervention, it's not just wrong. It is very disrespectful," the prime minister said.
"Enough is enough. No more pressure. No more innuendo. No more annexation fantasies," Nielsen urged.
