Funds can be used for the benefit of the Venezuelan people.
The Swiss government has frozen all assets held in the country belonging to dictator Nicolas Maduro and persons close to the Venezuelan president.
This is said in a government statement.
The decision, made by the Swiss Federal Council on Monday, January 5, does not concern members of the current Venezuelan government.
"If future legal proceedings establish that the funds were obtained illegally, Switzerland will make efforts to ensure that they are used for the benefit of the Venezuelan people," the statement reads.
Switzerland also emphasized that the asset freeze is an additional measure to the sanctions against Venezuela that have been in place since 2018.
The statement noted that the reasons for Maduro's fall from power do not play a decisive role in the asset freeze, nor does the question of "whether the fall from power occurred legally or in violation of international law."
The asset freeze takes effect on January 5 and will remain in effect for four years until further notice.
