German Foreign Ministry: Solidarity With The Baltics Is Important For Peace In Ukraine

The purpose of the first foreign visit of the German Foreign Minister in 2026 was Lithuania.

Germany's demonstration of solidarity with allies, particularly the Baltic states, sends a message to Russia that NATO and Europe remain united. It is also an important prerequisite so that the peace talks on Ukraine "can be concluded safely," German Foreign Minister Johann Wadeful said on Deutschlandfunk radio on Monday, January 5. This is how he explained why the target of his first foreign visit in 2026 was Lithuania, DW reports.

The German Foreign Minister emphasized that by doing so he wants to make it clear that in the current "critical situation in Europe" Germany is "quite clearly on the side of the Baltic States," remains committed to NATO and is aware of its responsibility in the difficult situation when Russia continues to arm and wage war in Ukraine.

The minister pointed to "constant attacks" on the Baltic states, in particular cable breaks in the Baltic Sea, for which, according to the German foreign minister, it is not yet possible to determine exactly who is behind them.

When asked whether Greenland should be the target of the next foreign trip, Johann Wadeful said he thought this was a possibility. He emphasized that Berlin's position on Greenland is unambiguous: it is part of Denmark, as are the Faroe Islands. "Our European cohesion on this issue is undeniable," he noted.

He went on to say that US President Donald Trump had "rightly pointed out" that Russia and China were showing increased interest in the Arctic region. "And Denmark is certainly willing to talk to the US on this topic. But, of course, it doesn't affect in any way the question of the territorial integrity of Greenland and Denmark," he added.

On January 4, Trump once again said that Greenland "we really need Greenland for defense." Whether he meant by "we" the United States or the West as a whole was not specified.

"It makes absolutely no sense at all to talk about the need for the United States to take over Greenland. The United States has no right to annex any of the three countries that make up the Danish kingdom," Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said afterward.

Commenting on the US military operation in Venezuela and the capture of Nicolas Maduro by the US military, Germany's foreign minister backed Chancellor Friedrich Merz's assessment, saying that in Venezuela "the situation as a whole is complex."

"We believe that the US needs to give its assessment and explain to the world on what legal basis this happened. So far, this has not been done," the German diplomatic chief stated.
