As part of the transition to NATO standards.

In Moldova, the military will gradually abandon Kalashnikov assault rifles as part of the transition to NATO standards. This was announced on the air of the national radio Moldova 1 by the head of the republic's Defense Ministry Anatolii Nosatii.

"We will finally switch to weapons used in the West, to the NATO caliber, which gives us access to logistics, ammunition and spare parts. We are doing it gradually," the minister said.

He said that four or five units have already abandoned these automatic rifles. Nosatii specified that he was referring to the regiment of the General Staff of the Moldovan Armed Forces and the Military Academy.

In October, the Moldovan government approved a military strategy for the period 2025-2035, which provides for the transition to NATO standards. According to the document, the country plans to modernize its armed forces. This will require purchasing new equipment, developing infrastructure and training personnel. It is also envisaged to increase defense spending to 1% of GDP.
