Bloomberg: After U.S. Special Operation In Venezuela, Taiwan Is Less Likely To Expect A Chinese Attack

Trump's actions have demonstrated to authoritarian leaders that the US is willing to use its military might in international affairs.

The U.S. special operation to capture unrecognized Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has become a deterrent to China's plans to seize Taiwan. This is according to a Bloomberg story published on January 5.

A high-ranking agency source in the Taipei security forces told reporters that US President Donald Trump's actions in Venezuela demonstrated to authoritarian leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, that Washington is willing to use its military might in international affairs.

The Bloomberg source noted that Taiwanese authorities do not believe that Trump's "apparent violation" of international law could prompt Beijing to take action regarding Taiwan.

China "lacks not precedent but capability," the media source said.

The material's author points out that after the US special operation in Venezuela, Chinese social networks have been swept by "nationalist sentiment" with opinions that what happened in Caracas is supposedly a model for how Beijing can respond to tensions with Taiwan.

Bloomberg writes that the special operation in Venezuela tested U.S. weapons that, among others, go to Taiwan and those previously transferred to Caracas by China and Russia, and Taiwan's Deputy Defense Minister Xu Sijian said Jan. 5 that the operation "fully demonstrated the level of sophistication of U.S. weaponry" compared to weapons from Russia and China.

The journalists recalled that the United States supports Taiwan and is deterring Chinese aggression against the island nation, and any invasion of the Chinese army there would lead to U.S. sanctions and - possibly - military action by the United States.

Another Bloomberg interlocutor among senior Taiwanese officials believes that the elimination of Venezuela's military might by the U.S. military in just "a few hours" will give Beijing "a lot to think about." In particular, it refers to the fact that the Chinese military had previously instructed the Venezuelan military and transferred Chinese equipment to them.
