Russia Is Unable To Maintain Its Ports In The Arctic

Ukrainian intelligence revealed the scale of the problems.

Russia has found itself unable to provide maintenance for its strategic ports in the Arctic. Due to systemic economic problems and a shortage of special equipment, the aggressor's northern sea route is in critical condition, Ukraine's Foreign Intelligence Service (SVRU) reported.

According to the intelligence service, ports in Russia's Arctic zone are suffering from a lack of component equipment for dredging and mooring repairs. Most of the equipment was foreign-made, and access to it is now blocked due to international sanctions.

"The Kremlin is forced to recognize the impossibility of fulfilling plans to develop the Arctic. The port infrastructure is falling into disrepair, and the outdated icebreaker fleet cannot cope with the load," the SVRU said.

The problems with port maintenance are directly hitting Russia's logistics plans. Moscow had hoped to make this route an alternative to the Suez Canal, but now it cannot guarantee safety even for its own cargoes. In addition to the technical factor, the situation is affected by the outflow of qualified personnel and the reorientation of budget funds to the war against Ukraine.

The intelligence pays special attention to Moscow's attempts to attract China to save its Arctic projects. However, Beijing is in no hurry to invest in the abandoned infrastructure, fearing secondary sanctions and low profitability.
