Royal Air Force aircraft were involved in the operation.
Britain's Defense Ministry said it supported U.S. efforts to detain the Russian-flagged tanker Bella 1 (Marinera) in the North Atlantic on Wednesday, including with the help of Royal Air Force aircraft.
This was announced by Defense Secretary John Healey, his statement cited by BBC.
Healey said the UK Armed Forces "demonstrated skill and professionalism by supporting the successful US interception of the Bella 1 vessel, which was bound for Russia."
He added that the action was part of a global effort to combat sanctions violations.
"This ship, which has a shameful history, is part of a Russian-Iranian axis of sanctions evasion that fuels terrorism, conflict and suffering from the Middle East to Ukraine. The UK will continue to strengthen its action against the activities of the Shadow Fleet to protect our national security, economy and global stability," Healey said."
