Ukrainian Foreign Minister On Detention Of Marinera Tanker: We Welcome Trump's Approach To Russian Federation

With Russia, we need to act, not fear.

The detention of the Russian tanker Marinera by the Americans shows the leadership of US President Donald Trump.

The Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrey Sibiga said this, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reported in Telegram.

"The detention of the Russian-flagged ship in the North Atlantic emphasizes the decisive leadership of the United States and President Trump. We welcome this approach in relations with Russia: to act, not to be afraid," Sibiga said.

He added that such an approach should be implemented in the peace process to bring a lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia closer.

We recall that today, January 7, the U.S. Coast Guard (detained the Russian-flagged tanker Marinera https://charter97.org/ru/news/2026/1/7/669176/). It happened between Iceland and the British Isles.

American servicemen pursued the tanker for several days. The operation was conducted with Britain's participation. According to British Defense Minister John Healey, the vessel was heading for Russia.

The U.S. Armed Forces Europe Command explained that the reason for the detention was a violation of the U.S. sanctions regime.
