The former commander of the US Army in Europe has spoken about a multinational force to help Ukraine.

The British and French stabilization forces for Ukraine will have to deploy thousands of combat troops if they are to successfully dissuade Russia from violating the post-war ceasefire. This was stated by Ben Hodges, the former commander of the US Army in Europe, writes The Guardian.

He said the proposed multinational force, which the British and French leaders discussed with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Paris this week, should be powerful enough to deal with likely provocations organized by the Kremlin.

"A coalition of the willing must have real force and rules of engagement that allow it to respond immediately to any breaches. Captains cannot call Paris or London to know what to do with a Russian drone," he said.

The retired general emphasized: the scenario that Russia will abide by any agreement is unrealistic. He recalled the period between 2014 and 2022, when Russia repeatedly violated the old ceasefire lines.

Hodges said that at the very least, British and French troops will have to be able to defend themselves against drones and other forms of attacks, as it is very likely that "Russia will immediately test their ability to respond."

Russian troops, the former general added, "have to look over there and say these guys are serious and not standing in a barracks somewhere near Lviv."
