Euractiv: Fear Reigns In The Kremlin

Trump has awakened Putin's worst nightmare.

Although it does not yet appear that US President Donald Trump intends to topple Vladimir Putin's regime in Russia, the lightning-quick operation by US intelligence agencies in Venezuela has made a strong impression on the Russian political leadership. Journalist Konstantin Eggert writes about this in an opinion piece for Euractiv.

He notes that Moscow was virtually powerless in the situation with Venezuela and could not prevent the kidnapping of dictator Nicolas Maduro. Therefore, no one particularly expected that the Kremlin would dare to directly confront the Americans in their "backyard."

The real concern of the Russian leadership was what happened after Maduro's kidnapping. Instead of completely ousting the entire ruling regime in Venezuela, as was done in Iraq, Washington chose a different approach. The White House agreed to let the deputy deposed dictator continue to run the country, retaining the entire former apparatus, provided that the Venezuelan government now cooperates with the United States.

"Trump has awakened Putin's worst nightmare," Eggert writes.

He explains that in a standard "regime change," when almost all top and middle echelon officials are removed from power, it triggers powerful resistance from the old structures: officials and businesses associated with the elites defend the regime, fearing problems for themselves in a change of leadership. In Venezuela, however, Trump demonstrated that the U.S. is ready to negotiate with the old apparatus after the leader is removed.
