Powerful Explosions Erupted In Lviv: Russia Could Have Struck "Oreshnik"

The rocket debris was transferred for examination.

On the night of January 9, a series of powerful explosions sounded during an air alert in Lviv. They were so strong that they were heard in neighboring regions. There is a version that Russia hit Lvivshchina with "Oreshnik", writes OBOZ.UA.

The explosions were reported by Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovy. According to him, they are now finding out the circumstances of the incident, as well as information about possible hits.

"After the air alert was announced, a series of explosions were heard in Lviv. Now we find out what exactly happened, whether they were arrivals and in what neighborhood. We are working with all services. We will promptly inform about the situation in the city," Sadovyi wrote in Telegram.

The Chairman of Lviv Regional State Administration Maksym Kozitsky added that a critical infrastructure facility in Lvivshchyna was attacked.

"More information - later. Please stay in shelters until bedtime," Kozitsky emphasized.

The air alert in Lviv region was announced at 23:30. About 10 minutes after that, local residents heard the sounds of explosions.

Monitoring chats suggest that the strike on Lviv could have been made by "Oreshnik". It is noted that six explosions were heard - that's how many "Cedar/Oreshnik" has.

Also in local publics wrote that, according to preliminary information, "Oreshnik" allegedly wanted to hit the Stryi gas field and gas storage in Lvivshchyna.

The version about Stryi was not confirmed, however. About this, in particular, wrote a well-known monitoring Telegram channel "Nikolaevsky Vanek". The author of the channel noted that the strike came to Lviv without BC (warhead - Ed.).

And the local channel reported that 36 empty warheads from the probable "Oreshnik" fell on the territory of the region.

Officially, however, it has not yet been confirmed that the territory of Lviv region was struck by the Russian missile "Oreshnik". Information about this will be provided by the military, emphasized the mayor Andriy Sadovy.

"Clarification regarding the shelling. Whether it was "Oreshnik" is not yet known. Information will be provided by the military. There is a flight on the object of critical infrastructure. All relevant services are working on the site, the elimination of the fire continues. There is no information on casualties yet. Civilian objects and residential houses of the city were not affected," - said the mayor of Lviv.

At the same time monitoring channels published footage of the strike on Lviv region.

"Indeed the strike on Lvivshchina was made by a missile "Kedr." Similar to the Dnepr, the warheads were either empty or filled with concrete/metal to create more kinetic energy," the monitoring channel writes.

Although an alarm has been sounded in Lviv and the region as of 00:11, authorities are warning of possible threats overnight.

OVA head Kozitsky reported at 01:40 that experts have conducted laboratory tests at the site of the missile attack in Lviv. "Radiation background is within normal limits. Exceeding the level of harmful substances in the air was not found," he shared the results.

Later, the Air Command "West" of the Air Force of the Ukrainian Armed Forces officially informed:

"On January 8 at 23 hours and 47 minutes, the enemy launched a missile attack on infrastructure facilities in Lviv, using a ballistic missile. The aerial target was moving at a speed of about 13,000 kilometers per hour along a ballistic trajectory."

The specific type of missile the military did not name. Specialists will collect all its elements, conduct an examination, and then make their conclusion.

We recall that according to the report of the GSD, on November 21, 2025, Russia struck the Dnieper River with a ballistic missile probably Kedr/Oreshnik.

The time of approach from the launch in the Astrakhan region to the hit in the city of Dnieper was 15 minutes. Six warheads were mounted on the missile: each equipped with six submunitions. The speed on the final section of the trajectory is more than Mach 11.
