The US president wants to go to war with the cartels that "run the country".
U.S. President Donald Trump has said that the United States will soon start fighting "on the ground" in Mexico. The American president is going to go to war against the cartels that allegedly "run Mexico."
Trump said this in an interview with Fox News.
"We're going to start taking action on the ground against the cartels. The cartels are running Mexico. It's very sad to see what has happened to this country," he said.
Trump added that "we have destroyed 97% of the drugs coming in by water," referring to a series of strikes on boats off the coast of Venezuela. And noted that cartels "kill 300,000 people in the United States every year."
"Drugs ... it's horrible. It devastates families. You lose a child or you lose a parent. I mean, parents die from drugs too. So we've done a really good job," he said.
At the same time, the U.S. president noted, the U.S. border is now "closed," although before Trump it was, they say, "in complete disarray for years."
"I did it the first time very quickly. And I did it even better this time because it was a bigger mess. It was a frontier that had probably never been in the history of the world. There's never been a border where anybody could just walk into your country. The border seems to be really closed now. Closed. You can't go in. And nobody goes in. Nobody's even trying," he assured.
Remember that after the successful operation in Venezuela on January 3, when the country's dictator Nicolas Maduro was captured, Trump made threats against Mexico and its president Claudia Sheinbaum. At the time, the US president also said that Mexico is allegedly "run by cartels" and something "needs to be done about it."
Sama Sheinbaum, meanwhile, made it clear that she does not believe that US President Donald Trump's threats to invade Mexico are really serious. She added that she is ready to cooperate with the U.S. in the fight against drug trafficking and condemned the U.S. operation in Venezuela.
