Since 2022, Russia Has Lost 19 Generals To Assassination

Among those eliminated are army commanders and chiefs of staff.

Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine since February 2022 has caused significant casualties among the Russian army's top commanders. According to open sources and Russian and Ukrainian media reports, at least 19 generals have died, although not all deaths have been officially confirmed by Moscow, writes The Insider.

Russian losses of generals have occurred both at the front and at the rear - as a result of artillery strikes on headquarters, air incidents, sabotage and bombings in Russia. Several high-ranking officers were killed by snipers in the early months of the war.

Also among the dead are officers who were already retired but had participated in combat operations, including PMC Wagner and Storm Z assault formations.

List of dead generals:

1) Andrey Sukhovetsky, major general, deputy commander of the 41st Combined Arms Army. He died on February 28, 2022 in Chernigov region - according to certain reports, he was shot by a sniper. He became the first general whose death was officially confirmed in the Russian Federation.

2) Oleh Mityaev, Major General, commanded the 150th Motorized Rifle Division, died in 2022 during the fighting for Mariupol. The Ukrainian Azov battalion claimed his elimination; the information was partially confirmed by Russian sources.

3) Vladimir Frolov, major general, deputy commander of the 8th Combined Arms Army, died on March 10, 2022 in Mariupol from sniper fire.

4) Andrey Simonov, major general, commander of electronic warfare troops of the Western Military District, died on April 30, 2022 after an artillery strike on a command post near Izium, Kharkov Region.

5) Kanamat Batashev, retired major general, participated in combat operations in PMC Wagner, died on May 22, 2022 during the shooting down of his Su-25 aircraft.

6) Roman Kutuzov, lieutenant general, chief of staff of the 8th Army, died on June 5, 2022 near Popasnaya.

7) Dmitri Ulyanov, retired major general, died on February 6, 2023, commanding a regiment of mobilized men in Tatarstan.

8) Sergei Goryachev, major general, chief of staff of the 35th Army, died on June 12, 2023, in Primorsk, Zaporozhye region, after a strike on his headquarters during a Ukrainian counteroffensive.

9) Oleg Tsokov, lieutenant general, deputy commander of the Southern Military District, died on July 11, 2023, during a strike on a reserve command post in Berdyansk.

10) Vladimir Zavadsky, major general, deputy commander of the 14th Corps, died on November 28, 2023, in Kherson Oblast, possibly hit by a mine or shelling.

11) Igor Trifonov, major general of police, died on December 12, 2023.

12) Andriy Golovatsky, retired major general, died on June 30, 2024.

13) Ildar Saidov, Major General of the Customs Service, after mobilization in the Storm Z assault unit, died on September 14, 2024.

14) Pavel Klimenko, Major General, commanded the 5th Guards Brigade, died on November 6, 2024.

15) Igor Kirillov, lieutenant general, head of radiation, chemical and biological protection troops, died on December 17, 2024 in an explosion in Moscow.

16) Konstantin Smeshko, major general, died on December 26, 2024; the circumstances of death have not been officially disclosed, could have been an air strike or a HIMARS strike.

17) Yaroslav Moskalik, lieutenant general, deputy chief of the Main Operations Directorate of the General Staff, died on April 25, 2025, in an explosion in Russia.

18) Mikhail Gudkov, Guards major general, deputy commander-in-chief of the Navy, died in a missile attack on July 2, 2025 (Russian sources reported death "while performing a combat task").

19) Fanil Sarvarov, lieutenant general, head of the General Staff's Operational Training Department, died in a car bomb explosion in Moscow on December 22, 2025.
