The Ukrainian president is ready for any format except Moscow or Belarus.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has told how he imagines his meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin and what exactly he wants to say to him.
"It's not about wanting to look him in the eye. In general, I am not interested in emotions when meeting with him. We have issues concerning Ukrainian territory that nobody can solve today. The politics of different countries have allowed Putin to express his opinion on this, occupying land and justifying his actions. There is only one power physically at war against him right now - Ukraine," he said in an interview with The Atlantic.
He said the conversation with him can only focus on ending the war.
"That means our conversation has to be as completely open as possible. It's just a conversation about how to end the war so that it doesn't start again," Zelensky noted.
He also responded to a question about how difficult it would be for him to contain his emotions during such a meeting:
"Why should I be emotional or emotionless? What's the difference? Our goal is to end the war. I think he may have a different goal. We don't know. We didn't meet during the war. Everybody was trying to do something, but the war continues. So I think it is logical to have a meeting of leaders who could discuss the most difficult issues. Who else can I talk to about territorial problems?"
The Ukrainian president does not think that either side has a real desire to meet.
"After all, we are enemies. Frankly speaking, no one has expressed a desire to do so. But the desire is there. I think it is the right decision to meet and try to end the war. Americans have asked what we think about the idea of such a meeting. We said we would support it. We are ready to meet in any format except Moscow or Belarus," he added.
