The assault on Kharg Island is being prepared.
U.S. officials have warned Israel and other allies that the U.S. may have no choice but to launch a ground operation to seize Iran's Kharg Island. This was reported by The Jerusalem Post on March 22, citing sources.
The Kharg Island plays a key role in the global oil trade - about 90% of Iran's crude oil exports pass through it.
According to media reports, in recent days the US administration has been discussing the feasibility of occupying Kharg in order to force Iran to stop blocking shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
The publication's interlocutors noted that the U.S. military has already accelerated the deployment of thousands of Marines and U.S. Navy ships to the Middle East.
The force includes the USS Boxer Readiness Group, which includes the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer, which is used as a light aircraft carrier, and the transport landing ships USS Portland and USS Comstock. The three ships carry about 4,500 Marines and additional combat personnel, The Jerusalem Post reported.
