NATO Countries Increase Defense Spending

By almost 20%.

European NATO allies of the United States, as well as Canada, for 2025 increased defense spending by 19.6% compared to the figure for 2024. This follows from the annual report of Secretary General Mark Rutte, published on Thursday, March 26, on the website of the military alliance.

The document indicates that all 32 NATO countries spent on defense last year 2% or more of their GDP. At the same time, seven of them - Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Denmark, Norway and the United States - allocated more than 3% of GDP to this sphere. And the expenditures of the first three countries exceeded the level of 3.5%, the achievement of which is planned by all member countries of the alliance for 2035.

Germany's defense spending in 2025 amounted to 2.39% of GDP. At the same time, the country's contribution is second only to the U.S.: of the $1.63 trillion spent by NATO on defense last year, $980 billion went to Washington, more than $120 billion to Berlin. Overall, the total contribution of all countries except the US was a record $574 million.

In June 2025, NATO countries agreed that defense spending should be brought to a level of 5% of their GDP by 2035. And 3.5% should be for classical defense needs, another 1.5% of GDP is planned to invest in the fight against terrorism and in the development of infrastructure that can be used for military purposes.

According to analysts, European countries that are members of NATO, by 2035 need to bring the amount of direct investment in defense to almost 2.2 trillion euros ($2.54 trillion). Only such an amount will help achieve the set rearmament goals and compensate for the possible cessation of deliveries of U.S. systems.
