The White House has said it is ready to take new steps.

U.S. President Donald Trump sent a formal communication to Congress on Monday about U.S. strikes on Iran in which he sought to justify military action.

The contents of the letter from the American president were seen by Fox News.

In the letter, Trump told interim Senate President </>Chuck Grassi, a Republican from Iowa, that "no U.S. ground troops were involved in these strikes" and the operation "was planned and executed to minimize civilian casualties, prevent future attacks, and neutralize Iran's malicious actions."

The president also indicated that the full scope of military operations against Iran cannot yet be determined and that the U.S. military is prepared to take further action.

"While the United States seeks a quick and lasting peace, it is not yet possible to determine the full scope and duration of military operations that may be necessary," he wrote.

To that end, Trump emphasized, the U.S. military remains prepared to "take further action, if necessary and appropriate, to counter further threats and attacks against the United States or its allies and partners."

"I have ordered this military operation consistent with my responsibility to protect Americans and the interests of the United States both at home and abroad, and in the national security and foreign policy interests of the United States," he added.
