Several hundred members of the U.S. Special Operations Forces have arrived in the Middle East to give President Donald Trump and the rest of the military additional options in the war with Iran, The New York Times reported.
The publication, citing two unnamed U.S. officials, indicated that the arriving military personnel have not yet been given specific missions. They will join thousands of Marines and paratroopers who were sent to the region earlier.
The publication points out that in total, more than 50,000 U.S. troops are now in the Middle East as Trump decides his next steps in the war with Iran.
The publication's sources said one of the targets of the newly arrived military may be to seize Iran's Kharq Island, a key oil terminal. The U.S. military may also be looking to protect shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
