Politico: Paris Urgently Changes Military Plans

Because of the experience of the war in Ukraine and Iran.

France has begun a major revision of its defense doctrine, preparing for a possible clash with Russia already at the end of this decade. This is reported by Politico with reference to statements by senior representatives of the French army.

The material notes that lessons from the war in Ukraine and the conflict in the Middle East will form the basis of an updated law on military planning, which the government will present on April 8. Paris is betting on cheap anti-drone capabilities and strengthening air defense.

"We are applying everything we can learn from Ukraine, especially in terms of capability development - whether it's in relation to what's happening in the Middle East now or future developments on the eastern flank," said General Dominique Tardif, deputy chief of the French Air Force.

The cheapening of warfare has reportedly become a priority. Western missiles currently cost significantly more than the Iranian kamikaze drones they shoot down. To correct this imbalance, France is working with Alta Ares and Harmattan AI to develop low-cost interceptor drones. According to experts, this will make it possible to effectively destroy Shaheds without wasting expensive missiles.

Prime Minister Sebastien Lecorniou said French companies are capable of producing thousands of drones a month. A new factory will open soon, he said, and France will spend 8.5 billion euros on munitions by 2030.

Special attention is being paid to protecting airbases. According to the publication, the French are impressed by the successes of Ukraine's Operation Web 2025, when strikes on Russian airfields put the Russian Federation's strategic aviation out of action. Now Paris is looking for ways to keep its own aircraft safe from such attacks.

In addition, the French command does not rule out direct aggression by Moscow against the Alliance in the coming years.

"It is possible that Russia will test NATO between 2028 and 2029. If there is a problem on the eastern flank - given that the Baltic States have no fighter aircraft and Romania has a limited amount - pilots from Western European countries, including us, will be on the front line from day one," General Tardif emphasized.
