Arrests for attempt to hold protest against fuel station construction

6

The chairman of Barysau branch of the international organization for human rights Alyaksandr Abramovich was detained in Barysau.

He planned to hold a meeting against construction of a filling station, to attract attention of the authorities to the protest against this construction by residents of the district of Ledzishcha, Dymki and Balnichnaya Street.

About 40 persons gathered to the action, but the rally didn’t start as Abramovich was immediately detained and taken to a police department.

A dweller of Barysau, Tamara Kavazhenka, told to Radio Svaboda, that Abramovich was to receive an answer from the authorities, whether the rally is authorized or not. However he didn’t manage that. As exactly on June 14 the residents were to receive answers to their numerous complaints, it was decided to hold the protest in any case.

“The fuel station is being built in front of a school, and residential houses and a hospital are beside. Many trees have been cut. We addressed the government, and there is no official authorization yet. But the construction is in progress,” Kavazhenka said.

This meeting is the second protest of Barysau dwellers against the fuel station construction. The first one gathered 250 participants.
