Political prisoner Alyaksandr Kazulin was released from the colony for three days to attend his wife’s funeral. The opposition politician was to come back to the colony by 8.00pm Minsk time on 28 February.

A. Kazulin left Minsk at about 5.00pm – it is minimum time to get to Vitsebsk, where the colony “Vitsba-3” is situated. His daughter Yuliya accompanied him. They drove in a car of one of the members of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Hramada) headed by Kazulin.

As a correspondent of the newspaper “Vzglyad” learnt from Kazulin’s press service, the car, in which the politician was coming back to the colony, was stopped by the road militia for overspeeding on the road near the Mount of Glory at 6.00pm. A report was drawn up against the driver. After 15 minutes the car was let go, but the driver was warned of revocation of driving licence.

Volha Kazulina supposes her father was detained intentionally, so that he would be late by8.oo and be punished.

The car was detained near the colony for the second time –all cars were stopped and inspected there. As politician’s daughter Yuliya says, her father got to colony on time.

A. Kazulin drove to the walls of the penal colony №3 at 7.59pm. All chiefs of the colony came to meet him. In spite the imposed obstacles, A. Kazulin managed to be in the colony on time.

On 13 July 2006 Alyaksandr Kazulin was found guilty in organising protest actions against rigging of presidential election results in March 2006. He was sentenced to 5 years and 6 months of imprisonment in minimum security penal colony. Amnesty International recognised Kazulin a prisoner of conscience.
