Lukashenka personally promised Kokoity recognize independence of South Ossetia

It has been told in an interview of Eduard Kokoity, president of breakaway unrecognized republic, to Russian press.

- Belarus is in no haste to recognise you, - said Russian “Komsomolskaya Pravda” journalist to the ruler of South Ossetia.

- They have promised us that they would do that for sure. Lukashenka says that he is to keep his word; that the recognition is to take place in the near future. We talked informally during the funeral ceremony of Alexiy II: me, Bagapsh and Lukashenka, Eduard Kokojty said.

Besides, in the same interview Kokojty said unambiguously: “We will raise a question about joining Russia and Belarus’ “union”, too”.

According to today’s reports, Georgian expatriate community of Belarus has addressed the “chamber of representatives” of Belarus concerning considering the issue of recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in April. According to representatives of the expat community, recognition of these republics can damage relations between Georgia and Belarus for a long time, Russian “Nezavisimaya gazeta” informs.

As it has been informed earlier, “parliament” of Belarus postponed presenting the subject of Abkhazia and South Ossetia’s recognition for discussion until spring.

“Regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, with the support of the Russian Federation, announced state independence in defiance of all notions of international laws,” members of Georgian expat community note. “Following Russia, only Nicaragua and Hamas have recognised the breakaway republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, while the whole civilized world recognises territorial integrity of Georgia”.

“The future of Georgia and numerous nationalities depends on your decision as well. Besides, your decision will influence the international standing of Belarus, the country which has become a second native home for many of us, and which future is not indifferent for us. We call upon you not to be limited by short-term interests and look into the future of our relations. Recognition of breakaway republics can damage relations between our countries for a long time, which undoubtedly would be a great mistake, which our children and grandchildren would have to straighten patch up,” the authors if the address say.
