British ambassador: “In a question of recognizing South Ossetia and Abkhazian, Belarus should choose by itself a company “

A decision on whether to recognize independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia or not is an inner affair of Belarus, but the recognition may make Belarus’s position in the EU more difficult.

It was said by Nigel Gould-Davies, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Kingdom to Belarus, Interfax reports.

This question is only for Belarus, and as far as I know, only two countries have recognized South Ossetia and Abkhazia – Russia and Nicaragua, the others 200 odd states haven’t done it so far, the ambassador noted at a press conference in Minsk.

He said the question should have been in what company Belarus wanted to see itself. Nigel Gould-Davies didn’t exclude the recognition might complicate the situation.

The Belarusian “house of representatives” is going to consider an issue on recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia on April 2. But the members of the parliament have recently begun to speak that this question may be postponed till the autumn session.

Official Georgia is concerned about possible recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia by Belarus under pressure of Russia. Besides Russia, these republics were recognized only by Nicaragua and Hamas terrorist group.
