Andrius Kubilius spoke against invitation of the Belarusian dictator to the 20th anniversary of Lithuania’s independence.
According to BaltInform news agency, it was said by the head of the Lithuanian government to radio Ziniu Radijas.
As BelaPAN reminds, on January 11, president lf Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite said she was “seriously considering “ an opportunity to invite heads of Belarus and Russia Alyaksandr Lukashenka and Dmitry Medvedev for celebrating the 20th anniversary of Lithuania’s independence in March.
Andrius Kubilius said he supported the decision of the head of state to invite Russian president Dmitry Medvedev for the event. “Of course it is the right decision to invite the heads of the neighbouring countries to such an important for Lithuania event. It is it hard to say whether the Russian president will arrive for an anniversary of our independence. His decision will depend on his personal position on this issue and on the extent to which this date is important for Russia," said Kubilius. He emphasized Lithuania would like Medvedev to accept the invitation.
Meanwhile, the Lithuanian prime minister noted invitation of Lukashenka was a “different issue” in the historical and international context, as the European Union has special demands to Belarus in human rights sphere.
“In my view, we should receive a comprehensive consultation in diplomatic circles before making this step,” Kubilius said.
