Belarusian Foreign Ministry blasts Barack Obama

28

The spokesperson of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry hastened to comment on the US extending sanctions against the Belarusain leadership.

To his mind, it shows "absence of political will of the US to resolve problems in bilateral relations". It was stated by the spokesperson of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry Andrei Savinykh in an interview to "Interfax" agency.

"Speaking about the sanctions against a number of state officials, after a long period of existence of these sanctions it is obvious for all that they are unsubstantiated and detached from real life," the Belarusian FM spokesperson noted.

"As it seems to us, extending these useless but confrontational in their character instruments shows that the US has no political readiness and will to develop interaction in the interests of peace and cooperation," Savinykh said.

"We are convinced that a constructive interrelationship between the US and Belarus would be beneficial not only for our countries, but for the region and the world community in general," stated the representative of the Foreign Ministry. A. Savinykh noted that "Belarus offers the US to depart from stereotypes of confrontational thinking and start work on cleaning the rubble in our bilateral relations". The spokesperson underlined that "lifting all kind of sanctions is a condition for starting such a dialogue".

As informed, US President Barack Obama extended sanctions against Alyaksandr Lukashenka and some other top officials of Belarus imposed back in 2006.

The sanctions concern some leaders of Belarus and other people undermining the democratic processes or institutions, violating human rights and involved in corruption, Obama said in his statement.

Despite the release of internationally recognized political prisoners in 2008 and US’s continuing efforts to press for democratic reforms in Belarus, serious challenges remain, the document reads.

The sanctions imposed by US President George Bush junior on June 16, 2006, include arrest of assets of blacklisted people on the US territory.
