Experts: Deliveries of Venezuelan oil through Latvia will be insignificant

4

Foreign Minister of Belarus Syarhei Martinau who visited Riga offered to Latvia Venezuelan oil, visit of Lukashenka and a simplified visa regime.

Political scientists say, that splash of neighbourliness between the countries – is only a display of “friendship” against Russia. We would like to remind, on August, 23, Foreign Minister of Belarus Syarhei Martinau was accepted at the highest level: the meetings with the president of Latvia Valdis Zatlers, Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis and the Head of Foreign Affairs Ministry Aivis Ronis took place.

As IA “Regnum” reminds, at the negotiations the strategic partnership in logistics sphere, transit of energy resources and the coming visit of Prime Minister of Belarus Syarhei Sidorski to Latvia were discussed. Meanwhile, Syarhei Martinau did not exclude the possibility, that after the visit of Belarusian Prime Minister the consultations concerning the meeting of Valdis Zatlers and Alyaksandr Lukashenko will start.

In the course of his visit Syarhei Martinau also held work consultations with the Minister of Transport and Communications of Latvia Caspar Gerkhards about the possible transit of energy resources through Latvia.

Trial consignments with the volume of 80 thousand tons came from Venezuela to Estonian port Muuga and Lithuanian Klaipeda. According to the opinion of Latvia experts, Latvia should not count on long-term prospects of oil transit from Venezuela.

“Probably, the deliveries of Venezuelan oil through Latvia will be too small to earn on them. It is a clear political project, which is beneficial to Belarus, as well as to Venezuela. The first is willing to prove Russia, that it is able to find an alternative to Russian oil, and the president of Venezuela Hugo Chavez is trying to achieve international recognition from EU”, - an economist Alyaksandr Haponenka said.
