Free port of Riga won’t transport oil for Lukashenka

As it turns out, no concrete agreements have been reached during the visit of the head of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry to Riga.

Riga port does not have infrastructure for bulk traffic of oil bought by Belarus in Venezuela.

“Today it is impossible to transfer this oil in our port,” said Chief Executive Officer of the Freeport of Riga Leonid Loginov to Dienas Bizness newspaper, “Telegraf.lv” informs.

As said by him, the offer to transfer Venezuela oil through the capital of Latvia was expressed just as an idea.

“No one said that tomorrow Belarusians would come to Riga port and start pumping millions of Venezuela oil through it. During the visit to Riga the Foreign Minister of Belarus simply asked whether something like that could be possible in Riga. And he was answered that nothing is impossible theoretically,” Loginov said.

In any case, in order to transfer such a quantity of oil, the port would need a new terminal, as the existing ones would not have enough capacity, he added.

We remind that during his visit to Latvia Syarhei Martynau, Belarus Foreign Minister, held negotiations with Minister of Transport Kaspars Gerhards about possible transit of energy resources through Latvia.

Trial consignments of 80 thousand tons were received from Venezuela to Muuga port of Estonia and Lithuanian Klaipeda. Then the oil was taken to oil refineries of Belarus via railway.
