Belarusian regime was criticized at the UN

Every day at the session of the United Nations Human Rights Council

Every day criticism against Belarusian authorities is heard at the session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

The 15th session of the UN Human Rights Council continues in Geneva. On the first day, September 13, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem Pillay blasted Belarus for the situation with the rights of non-governmental organizations. On September 17 criticism against our country continued. A representative of Belgium Alex Van Meeuwen on behalf of the EU noted:

“The EU hopes that the presidential election in Belarus will be held without violations of human rights, especially of the right for freedom of expression and public associations. The European Union also calls upon the Belarusian authorities to impose the moratorium on capital punishment.”

Beside Belarus, Alex Van Meeuwen spoke about the situation with human rights in Iran, Bahrain, Sudan, Somalia, Myanmar, North Korea.

Representatives of the countries with highest standards of democracy and human rights in the world, Norway and Sweden, also spoke about the situation with human rights in Belarus with regret.

A representative of Norway Geir Sjøberg said: “We share the concern of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights as for the situation in Belarus. Civil society representatives, including human rights activists, religious communities, mass media, political parties still have limitations for their legitimate activities.”

Geir Sjøberg also noted that respect to human rights is the main prerequisite for deepening relations of Belarus with the European community.

Jan Knutsson said: “recent incidents in Belarus are pitiful. They show that the situation for journalists holding investigations and for human rights activists is grave.”
