Polish MFA: Yanukovych is a long way off being Lukashenka

There are no reasons to draw simple analogies between the democratic situation in Ukraine and Belarus.

This statement was made by Jerzy Pomianowski, the Under Secretary of State in the Polish MFA, in a comment to UNIAN information agency in Warsaw.

“Any country may have violations of electoral procedures. The question is how the problem is solved later. The authorities either correct them or ignore, or, like Alyaksandr Lukashenka, disperse a demonstration and throw people into prisons,” he said.

The under secretary of state noted the elite governing the country since 2010 was elected as a result of normal elections and it would not be interested in rigging the oncoming parliamentary elections.

“There are no reasons today to think about black scenarios,” the Polish under secretary of state said. He expressed an opinion the Ukrainians should estimate if they are satisfied with the situation in Ukraine basing on the election results. According to Pomianowski, the free media will contribute to the democratic character of the Ukrainian parliamentary elections.

The representatives of the European Parliament have suggested the prospects for the EU-Ukraine relations depend on how democratic the autumn elections for the Verkhovna Rada will be. The European Union earlier imposed sanctions on official Minsk accusing the country of violating democratic norms.
