Poland will raise the issue of Russian military base at NATO forum

Warsaw will have to react on the deployment of a Russian aviation base in Belarus.

If recent statements of Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu about the plans to deploy a new military base in the West of our country are serious, then Poland will have to raise the issue of the shift in the balance of power in Central Europe at a NATO forum. A well-known Polish MEP Pawel Kowal stated that.

In the opinion of Polish military experts, A Russian aviation base does not create a direct threat to Poland, however, the deployment of S-300 missile systems may break the equilibrium in the region, Polskie Radio reports.

Serious conclusions must be made out of this event, - Pawel Kowal claimed. – Russians believe that the strategic situation in Belarus will allow them to increase their military presence there and change the balance of power in Central Europe. If Sergei Shoigu’s statements are serious, but not just propaganda, we will have to raise the issue of the balance of power in Central Europe at a NATO discussion”, - he stated.

Some military experts agree that strengthening of Russian military influence in Belarus bears a threat to Warsaw.

“The range of those missile systems is so big that the one who owns them is able to control the sky over Poland”, - the editor in chief of the Polish Raport: Wojsko-Technika-Obronność Wojcech Luczak stated.

A proof of the strategic significance of S-300, four divisions of which will be supplied to Belarus, may be found in that it almost became a reason for a military conflict between Greece and Turkey, the expert believes. They wanted to deploy the system in Cyprus, but Turkish airfields appeared to be in the range, so Ankara fiercely protested. The relations between Poland, Belarus and Russia are also far from cloudless. Very recently, according to the expert, Russian and Belarus simulated an offensive operation at Polish territory.
