Disappointing start for Dinamo Minsk in Riga

Dinamo Minsk started their 6th season in the Kontinental Hockey League with a defeat from their Riga namesakes on 5 September.

The Belarusian team lost 1-2 to the delight of Riga’s 9,250 fans in attendance.

The Minskers had an unlucky start allowing two early goals. Gints Meija gave Dinamo Riga a 1-0 lead just two minutes after the opening faceoff. Kyle Wilson extended Riga’s advantage eight minutes later.

After the first break the Bisons ramped up their defense and created a number of quality moments at Mikael Tellqvist’s end. Minsk’s offense finally came through with a goal by Jacob Micflikier in the final stanza. Using heavy traffic in front of Riga’s goaltender the Canadian forward stole the puck to send it behind Tellqvist’s back into the net. Unfortunately, despite all the efforts, Minsk could not get an equalizer and put the first loss into their 2013/14 KHL record.

Dinamo Minsk are back in action on Sunday, 8 September, when they host CSKA Moscow at Minsk Arena.

In other two matches on 5 September Metallurg Novokuznetsk beat Sibir Novosibirsk 3-2, Spartak Moscow blanked Atlant Moscow Region 2-0.
