The minister of foreign affairs of Belarus says the West will put forward new claims if the political prisoners are released.
Uladzimir Makei emphasises the claims won't comply with the mentality of the people of Belarus, Interfax reports.
“We have a realistic view of the situation and know that if we released those dubbed [by the West] 'political prisoners', they [the West] would put forward new claims to Belarus,” Makei said on the air of Belarus 1 TV channel on Friday.
“For example, they could ask why Belarus does not register same-sex marriages. They would dislike that children call their parents 'mom' and 'dad' instead of 'parent 1' and 'parent 2' as it is usual in their countries,” the Belarusian foreign minister said.
“We think a hegemon or a superpower should not tell the people of Latin America, Africa, Southeast Asia or Europe what to do. It's up to people to decide their own destiny,” Makei added.
