The “legal base for the control over the distribution of information by the media” has been created in Belarus.
The statement was made by minister of information Lilia Ananich at a meeting of the ministry's board, BelTA reports.
The legal base that allows punishing online media for distributing false information was created as the new law on the media came into force on January 1, 2015.
The ministry works to restrict access to a number of websites. According to the minister of information, the ministry often receives requests [for restrictions] from citizens.
“It is very important for all mass media to work on rtheir epresentation on the Internet,” according to Lilia Ananich. She drew attention to the fact that most printed media outlets have and regularly update their websites and create accounts on social networking sites.
Charter97.org and a number of other independent sites were blocked for all users in Belarus on December 19, 2014.
Our technical support managed to minimise consequences of the blockage, but many Belarusian users continue to report about problems accessing the website.
