Declaration On Independence Of Belarus Read Out Near GUM Department Store

Belarusians were greeted on their Independence Day.

Over 20 people, including the UCP Chairman Anatol Liabedzka, Co-Chairman of the BCD Vital Rymasheuski, First Vice-Chairman of the movement “For Freedom” Yury Hubarevich, a parliamentary hopeful, the UCP activists Mikalai Kazlou, Volha Mayorava and others, took part in the picket near the entrance to the GUM department store. They read out the text of the Declaration, adopted back in 1990, through a megaphone, the Belarusian News agency reports.

Liabedzka stated that the right-centrists wanted to congratulate Belarusians on this important date. “We would like to remind what happened 26 years ago. We will do the thing the officials failed to do today, — we will read out the document which should have hanged on their office walls instead of Lukashenka’s portraits,” — he said.

The policemen in plain clothes watched the picket. They filmed the action but did not interfere.
