Lithuania Appointed Special Ambassador For Belarusian NPP Issues

The diplomat will be appointed this week.

Lithuania will appoint a special ambassador to coordinate agencies' actions on the issues of the NPP, which is being constructed in Astravets. This was announced on Tuesday at a meeting of the Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Lithuanian Minister of Environment and the Lithuanian Minister of Energy, delfi.lt reports.

Kyastutis Vashkyalyavichyus, the Public Relations Representative of Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius, reported that the diplomat would be appointed this week. His name is not disclosed until the decree is signed.

The three Ministers have also signed a letter to the high-level representatives of the European Commission and the Director of the International Atomic Energy Agency in which they draw attention to the already sixth incident related to the construction of the NPP in Astravets and request to ensure control of the organizations involved in the realization of this project.

In those letters Lithuania expresses its conviction that Belarus will continue the unsafe development of the NPP, which will be located only 50 km from Vilnius, and if they continue the construction without complying with the international safety requirements, it will endanger the entire region.
