A Dig At ‘People’s Car’ Manufacturer

The "Holy cow" of the Belarusian industry can probably be butchered.

Lukashenka is dissatisfied with the fact that the new Belarusian-Chinese plant "BelJ" is still not built, Solidarity writes.

The alarming calls for the enterprise’s management sounded at the meeting on July 11, when Lukashenka instructed the State Control Committee to prepare a report on some "modernized enterprises under construction".

Further on, he added that there were problems at the enterprises under construction in Svetlahorsk and Dobrush, as well as at the plant for the production of passenger cars, which remains not open.

- I'm waiting for a report on how things are going at these enterprises, - Lukashenka warned.

This refers about the notorious Belarusian-Chinese factory "BelJ", which in 2017 was supposed to start producing a "national car" Geely. The fact that the assembly production of this brand was stopped in Belarus since the beginning of the year makes the situation piquant - and it was planned to really launch the production of light cars exactly at a new plant in the Minsk region.

However, the enterprise, in which about 250 million dollars was invested, has not yet been built. In addition, experts doubt that the new assembly line will be able to provide 30% of the localization of production, which are necessary for the duty-free sales of cars on the market of the EAEU.

As we see, so far the fate of the Belarusian "people's car" does not look too rosy. In such a situation, the head of state may have nothing left but to traditionally arrange a public takedown and find the guilty of the disruption of his grand plans.
