Uruchcha Dwellers Win Due To Protest

Residents of Uruchcha microdistrict of the capital won their right to fresh air.

Residents of Minsk microdistrict Uruchcha-2 protested against construction works and won: there will be no cars in the green zone on Shuhaeva Street. But for how long?

The district administration postponed the planned construction over a long period. They planned to build a recreation complex, an underground garage and two parking lots right next to the houses on Shuhaeva Street, Belsat reports.

By law, the city authorities should invite residents to public discussions before starting a construction project, but this time no one consulted with the locals. Dwellers began to collect signatures and invited journalists to draw attention to the unexpected construction.

This is not the first attempt to encroach on this piece of land

Residents have been trying to confront the housing development in the neighborhood for the past 10 years. But this is the first time when the city authorities have reached out to the people.

"We inspired our entire house within 1 day, the residents simply took to the street massively, and the officials were amazed, because over a month they collected only 20 signatures "for"," – the local Maryna Hrabionkina explained.

Although the residents are happy with the victory, they call it temporary, since the place next to the metro station may soon attract new developers.
