Babruisk Resident Announces Hunger-Strike

The court punished her for the participation in a non-existing demonstration.

The woman tried to appeal the decision of the court and prove that the demonstration she allegedly participated in hadn’t actually been held. But no. Solidarity already reported the absurd situation, which 65-year-old Babruisk resident Liubou Sankevich found herself in.

Having disagreed with the court’s decision, the lady tried to protect her rights in court. However, here she faced the “peculiarities” of the functioning of the Belarusian judicial system.

As it turned out, for every instance in which the lady wanted to appeal an unjust decision of the court, she had to pay a state fee of Bn 46.

- It turns out that now the pensioner, who receives a pension of Bn 180, needs to pay a state fee at each stage, when defending her rights in court. For example, if she wants to go with her case to the Chair of the Supreme Court to tell them how the Belarusian judges work, she will have to pay Bn 184! - lawyer Tamara Siarhei commented on the situation.

According to the human rights activist, thus, the state deprives a person of the right to judicial protection in full scope.

Moreover, Liubou Sankevich appealed to the regional prosecutor, as well as to the court of Mahiliou region with a request to allow her not to pay the fee, and the appeals were declined twice.

- Mrs. Sankevich said that she would have to go out to protest in the form of a hunger strike, - Tamara Siarhei warned.

Important to note, the pensioner was previously held accountable for participation in a non-existent demonstration, which had allegedly taken place on March 25 in the Independence Square in Minsk.
