US Charge D’Affaires In Belarus: We Strongly Support Your Independence

The Declaration on State Sovereignty became the first step towards Belarus gaining independence in 1991.

The US strongly supports the independence and sovereignty of Belarus, US Charge d'Affaires in the Republic of Belarus Robert Riley said, interfax.by reports.

"As I have repeatedly said, the US strongly supports the independence and sovereignty of Belarus," - Riley said in a statement dedicated to the 27th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration on State Sovereignty of Belarus.

The Charge d'Affaires remarked that the declaration was the first step in the process that led to Belarus gaining independence in 1991.

The Supreme Council of the Byelorussian SSR adopted the Declaration on State Sovereignty on July 27. The Declaration proclaimed "the full state sovereignty of the Republic of Belarus as the supremacy, independence and completeness of the state power of the republic within the borders of its territory, the legitimacy of its laws, the independence of the republic in foreign relations."
