The UN Human Rights Committee registered the appeal of Yury Kazakevich.

The UN Human Rights Committee registered the appeal of activist from Baranavichy Yury Kazakevich, which concerned the violation of the citizen's right to peaceful assembly, “Viasna” HRC reports.

Human rights activist from Baranavichy Siarhei Housha recalls: “On December 14, 2016, by order of Judge Zhanna Salahubik of Svislach district court, Hrodna region, Baranavichy activist of the “Movement for Freedom” Yury Kazakevich was fined for 10 base fees (Bn 210) under Part 1 of Art. 23.34 of the Administrative Code of the Republic of Belarus “participation in unsanctioned mass events at the territory of the town of Svislach and the village of Yakushouka in the Svislach district, which violated the established procedure for holding a mass event ...”.

Disagreeing with the decision of the court of first instance, Kazakevich appealed it in the Hrodna regional court. However, on February 14, 2017 the Hrodna regional court found no grounds for repealing or changing the decision of the Svislach district court and his complaint was dismissed.

Members of the Baranavichy branch of the human rights center “Viasna” helped the activist prepare and on 01.08.2017 send a complaint to Geneva to the UN Human Rights Committee on violation of his rights by Belarus.

“Since registration, it will be a long time before the decision is made, but Yury Kazakevich hopes that the truth will be with him and he will be able to prove that he was punished illegally by the court,” - human rights activist Siarhei Housha summed up.
