Blocking Is Acknowledgment That People Need Charter’97
Vytautas Landsbergis

It’s needed to steer up the entire international community.

The first head of the independent Lithuania Vytautas Landsbergis commented upon the blocking of Charter97.org by the Belarusian authorities:

- Everything seems to be moving to the total and absolute dictatorship. It’s time to ring all the alarm bells worldwide, because tomorrow it may be too late. What is going to happen next? Will Lukashenka ban mobile phones? Skype? Will he place a lock on the Internet? This is a madhouse. There’s a huge madhouse in Russia, and a slightly smaller one in Belarus.

The popularity of the news portal appeared a big problem for the dictator. If this website hadn’t been popular, no one would have touched it. But this was a sort of a recognition that the website Charter97.org was needed by the people. The Lukashenka regime never changes, or is rather getting worse.

I think that you will have to remember the good old days of resistance, when everybody tuned their receivers to the waves of the Voice of America and the Radio Liberty. You will have to return to the times of printing leaflets and underground press.

And the influence of the Russian media will grow stronger in Belarus and the madhouse will grow. It is necessary that smart and responsible people urged the population not to read and not to listen to propaganda. What is happening now in the information field of Belarus will certainly have an impact on the entire region.

The international community would like to give advice: do not be stupid. This is difficult advice, but only so it is possible to keep peace in Europe.
