Lithuanian Prime Minister Announces “Hooligan Plan” For Belarusian NPP

Saulius Skvernelis proposes to convert the Astravets NPP into a gas-fired power station.

The Belarusian NPP should be reconstructed so that it is a gas-fired power station. This proposal was voiced by the Prime Minister of Lithuania Saulius Skvernelis, who is running for president of the country, Delfi reports.

“We also see prospects in the renewable energy area which does not drag the country into projects lasting for a hundred of years. Naturally, it is Belarus' right to decide: to keep on having an energy policy based on one-sided dependence on one country or to make strategic changes in the energy area. This is the path Lithuania is taking and it could become a good example and a beneficial partner for Belarus,” – the Lithuanian prime minister said.

Skvernelis believes that this might ensure that the Astravet's power plant would not start operating. He added that the proposal is related to the recent Espoo Convention decision.

According to the Lithuanian prime minister, this solution may “correct that mistake of choosing the wrong place for the nuclear power plant's construction.”

As the Сharter97.org website reported, Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite called for the Belarusian NPP to be closed without any conditions.
