Ihar Komlik: This Is Absurd! Investigators Cannot Return Equipment For Two Years

The Investigatory Committee uses some strange methods in its work.

One of the leaders of the REP Trade Union Ihar Komlik told Narodnaya Volya about why investigators have not been returning computer equipment for almost two years.

In August 2018, the Savetski district court sentenced leaders of the REP Trade Union Henadz Fiadynich and Ihar Komlik to 4 years of restraint of liberty without being sent to penal open-type institutions, with a ban on occupying leadership positions for a period of 5 years.

They were found guilty under Part 2 of Article 243 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus (“large-scale tax evasion”).

However, the equipment, which the investigators took away during the searches in August 2017, has not yet been returned.

“As far as we know, the equipment is now in the Minsk Department of the Investigatory Committee,” says Ihar Komlik. “We have made several inquiries about this, but as they say, nothings seems to be moving from the dead spot.

It is also known that a part of the case materials was allocated in a separate proceeding, and they are trying to close it. The Prosecutor's Office, however, seems to have returned the relevant documents to the Investigatory Committee for the second time, on the grounds that the case does not specify the fate of the withdrawn equipment of the REP trade union and our personal one.

- What equipment is now with the investigators?

- In our family, three laptops and a mobile phone were taken away, two computers and a telephone were taken from Henadz Fiadynich, and five hard drives were seized in the trade union’s office.

- Is it really so difficult to return the equipment that was confiscated about two years ago ?!

- This is some kind of absurdity! All the possible court hearings have already passed, the decisions have been made, we are serving the sentence for six months, and the investigators cannot return what does not belong to them.

When the investigation was conducted, these computers were checked, the investigators took the files that interested them, but almost a year had passed since the trial. And even if they still need some information, then it is easy to copy it.

I think, investigators no longer need this equipment, it is gathering dust in some warehouse. And it is not known in what condition. I just have fears that they consciously or not consciously broke the equipment.

In 2011, computers were already seized from us, and when they returned, we did not check them on the spot. And in the office it turned out that we had burned hard drives, “burned” optical discs, flash cards were also out of service. It is not excluded that our computer equipment got the same fate now.
