People, Get Over Yourself: Public Transport In Belarus During Pandemic

The Belarusians don't care about anything.

The Belarusian authorities have not introduced quarantine - people have to go to work and study as usual. And although it's possible to plan a trip in the capital by relatively frequent and spacious vehicles, in the regions the intervals are less frequent and there's almost no alternative to small minibuses, Radio Svaboda reports.

According to Lukashenka, Belarus would not be able to survive if the economy stopped following the example of neighboring countries. So he "worries" about "people living their lives".

On April 2, photo correspondents observed public transport during rush hour in Minsk and four regional centers. This is what they saw.

Vitsebsk

The check taker in the trolleybus said a third of the passengers are now travelling. And starting this week, she said they're reducing the number of runs.

Homel

There are fewer people at the stops in the centre of Homel even during rush hour. The transport saloons are half empty. People wearing masks have started to appear, but so far they are few. According to taxi drivers, recently they've lost a lot of clients - almost all day they have to wait for work. They explain it by that people have less money.

Hrodna

There are fewer people in the transport during rush hour. There are few people wearing masks, no sign of people wearing gloves.

Mahiliou

Buses are almost empty during rush hour. People walk home, if possible. Along with that, the central pedestrian street is almost empty.

Minsk

In Minsk, more and more people in public transport are wearing masks.
