Washington is closely monitoring the situation in Belarus.

US congressmen and senators today receive numerous appeals from Belarusians living in America, who draw the attention of politicians to the lawlessness in Belarus, repressions against civilians, and gross violations of human rights.

The United States is calling for the Lukashenka regime to release all the illegally arrested and detained citizens.

The answers of American politicians indicate that they are aware of the situation in Belarus in the Congress, and are considering possible measures to end the repression.

Charter97.org provides an answer to one of the appeals of California Senator Democrat Diana Feinstein:

“As you know, the Belarusian authorities constantly harass the civil society and independent media, exert pressure on them, pass laws restricting journalists' access to official events, and prosecute those who refuse to obey. The United States believes that personal freedom and free speech are fundamental principles, human rights that the United States must uphold throughout the world. The United States must continue to act on these values if people become targets of persecution and oppression.”

The senator also recalled the “Act in Support of Democracy in Belarus,” which, in particular, provides for assistance to independent media, and assured that she will closely monitor the situation in Belarus.
